Public Act 09-187: Operation of golf carts on certain roadways.
The DMV does not register golf carts. The public act allows a city's traffic authority to permit golf carts on roads with a maximum 25 mph speed limit.
Check with the local traffic authority to find out: (1) if it allows golf carts; (2) where you can use them; and (3) its rules for using them. Some municipalities are still setting rules for the use of golf carts. Others have regulations such as: to operate a cart, the operator must have a valid Connecticut driver's license. Operation is limited to daylight hours only. Each golf cart must be equipped with an operable horn. Each golf cart must have a flag. It must help drivers see the cart's location and operation. The authorities will not allow operations on any street or highway with a speed limit over 25 mph. It's an infraction to operate a golf cart in violation of these rules, any insurance requirements, or local traffic laws.
